Privacy for families: what parents need to know
Children's location data, chat histories, calendar entries — sensitive data needs special protection. Here's how Famora.EE approaches privacy.
When it comes to the digital safety of our families, trust is the most important foundation. Especially for apps that process children's location data, parents need to know exactly what happens to that sensitive information.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sets strict standards for handling personal data across Europe. Yet many popular apps meet these standards only minimally — or sidestep them with servers in the US and complicated privacy policies nobody actually reads.
At Famora.EE, we didn't treat privacy as a box to check, but as a core value. Concretely, that means:
Hosting in Germany: all servers are located in German data centers. No data leaves the EU. That's not just a promise — it's technically guaranteed by the choice of our infrastructure partners.
Encryption: messages in the family chat are transmitted encrypted (TLS) and stored encrypted. Access is limited to your family. The same applies to shared calendar entries and location information.
Location data with an expiry date: family members' location data is automatically and irrevocably deleted after 30 days. There are no archives, no long-term storage, no movement profiles. Parents can enable or disable location sharing individually for each family member.
No sharing with third parties: Famora.EE doesn't sell data, doesn't show ads, and doesn't pass information on to third parties. The business model is based on a fair subscription price, not on monetizing user data.
Children in particular are subject to heightened protection requirements. Article 8 of the GDPR requires that processing personal data of children under 16 is only permitted with parental consent. Famora.EE implements this consistently: children can only be added to a family by a parent, and all privacy settings are managed by the parents or guardians.
Transparency matters to us. Within the app, parents can view what data is stored at any time, and export or delete it. The right to data portability and the right to erasure aren't theoretical GDPR rights here — they're practical features in the app.
We recommend that all parents ask three questions when choosing digital tools for the family: Where is the data stored? Who has access to it? And how can I delete everything? At Famora.EE, the answers are simple: in Germany, only the family, and at any time with a single tap.
